Spiritual, religious, and astrological significance of plants in Hindu culture

From ancient scriptures to modern-day rituals, trees and plants have been regarded as sacred embodiments of divine energy.

This belief has been upheld in various texts including the Vishnudharmottara Purana, Manu Smriti, Padma Purana, Varaha Purana, and Bhavishya Purana. These scriptures highlight the immense merits of planting and preserving trees, often equating it with performing great yajnas (sacrificial rituals).

SCRIPTURAL REFERENCES TO THE IMPORTANCE OF TREES

Vishnudharmottara Purana - States that planting trees offers the same merit as performing an Ashwamedha Yajna.

Manu Smriti - Suggests that planting trees earns as much virtue as performing sacred rituals.

Bhavishya Purana - Equates trees to children for childless couples, calling them symbols of legacy.

Padma Purana - Emphasizes planting Peepal trees near water bodies to gain the merits of hundreds of yajnas.

Varaha Purana - Lists specific trees like Peepal, Neem, Banyan, and Mango whose plantation prevents a person from going to hell.

RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE OF SACRED PLANTS

Tulsi (Holy Basil) - Revered as a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi, it is worshipped daily in many Hindu households. It symbolizes purity, devotion, and health.
