Seat-sharing rifts cloud Opp'n ahead of Assam polls

As Assam gears up for the Assembly elections scheduled for March-April 2026, the contest appears clearly split between a confident ruling NDA and a divided Opposition.
A total of 126 seats are at stake, reshaped following the 2023 delimitation exercise. This time, seat-sharing has emerged as the central issue, particularly for alliances.
The NDA, led by the BJP, is projecting unity and confidence. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on February 22 that seat-sharing discussions among alliance partners are a “done deal”. The NDA comprises the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF). Smaller parties such as Rabha Hasong Joutha Sangram Samiti and Janashakti Party are also part of the alliance.
