PM Modi calls Ethiopia visit “truly memorable”, says ties gain fresh momentum

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday concluded his Ethiopia visit by describing it as “truly memorable”, as India and Ethiopia elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, marking a major expansion of cooperation across political, economic and people-centric sectors.

In a post on X after wrapping up the visit, the Prime Minister said his engagements with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and his address to the Ethiopian Parliament had given fresh momentum to ties rooted in shared values and a common vision for the future. He also thanked the Ethiopian leadership and people for their warmth, noting that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed personally came to see him off at the airport.

‘The centrepiece of the visit was the decision to upgrade India-Ethiopia relations to a Strategic Partnership, providing a structured, forward-looking framework covering trade, development, defence, agriculture, education and technology. Both sides signed three key Memoranda of Understandingon cooperation in United Nations peacekeeping training, mutual administrative assistance in customs matters, and the establishment ofa data centre at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An MoU on debt restructuring under the G20 Common Framework was also concluded.
