Piles of waste hinder rescue of man swept into canal

Joy (47), a temporary cleaning worker, went missing while cleaning the waste-filled canal crisscrossing through the heart of Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.

A search and rescue operation is continuing on Sunday to trace a sanitation worker who was swept away in rainwater while cleaning the Amayizhanchan canal here a day ago. However, piles of waste and marsh accumulated in the canal are hindering rescue operations.

Joy and two other workers were engaged in cleaning the Thampanoor part of the canal near the railway station when the water flow increased due to heavy rainfall, sweeping him into a 200-metre-long tunnel below the tracks of the platform at the central railway station.

The Director General of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Department (KFRD), K. Padmakumar, discussed the ongoing rescue operation of a 42-year-old employee on Sunday. The man had gone missing in the Amayizhanjan canal near Thiruvananthapuram railway station yesterday morning.
