Revising India's National Accounts Base Year What's Changing?

India's adoption of a new Gross Domestic Product (GDP) series with base year 2022-23 marks a significant step in improving the measurement of its economy.

GDP is the most widely used indicator of economic performance, representing the total value of goods and services produced within a country. However, as economies evolve structurally over time, statistical systems must be updated to ensure that GDP estimates remain accurate and reflective of current realities.

India's latest revision, undertaken by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), is therefore not merely a technical adjustment but a necessary modernization of national accounts.

NEW BASE YEAR 2022-23

A base year in GDP calculations serves as a reference point for estimating real (inflation-adjusted) growth. Over time, changes in consumption patterns, production structures, and price behavior make older base years less relevant. India's previous GDP series was based on 2011-12, a period before several transformative developments such as the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the rapid expansion of the digital economy, and the structural shifts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. By updating the base year to 2022-23, the new series reflects a more stable and contemporary economic environment, capturing post-pandemic normalization and the increasing role of technology and formalization.
