How China's Trade War Threatens US Arms Firms With Rare Earths Supply Shortages

Analysts warn that this could severely disrupt production for a range of military systems, including fighter jets, submarines, and drones.

A new set of export licensing restrictions imposed by China on seven key rare earth elements has raised alarms among experts. These elements—samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium—are integral to the production of advanced military technology. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) highlighted in a recent commentary that these restrictions could affect more than a dozen U.S. defense and aerospace companies.

The warning was also echoed by the prestigious UK think tank Chatham House, which underscored the potentially devastating impact on the U.S. defense industry. According to Chatham House, further tightening of Chinese export controls could not only harm the U.S. defense sector but also undermine President Trump's broader goal of re-industrializing America.
