According to Dr. Pankaj “We often underestimate how much damage a small wound or nail problem can cause in diabetic patients. Due to impaired blood supply and nerve sensitivity, even the tiniest injury can turn into a surgical emergency.”

Diabetes affects circulation and nerve function. Reduced blood flow delays healing, while neuropathy makes it difficult for patients to feel pain or pressure in the feet. As a result, when a toenail grows into the skin, patients may not notice the early signs—such as redness, swelling, or tenderness. By the time they seek medical attention, the toe may already be infected.
