From fitness age to medicine age: Lifestyle diseases rising fast among Indian youths

Once considered illnesses of middle or old age, these conditions are now appearing a decade or even two decades earlier, raising serious public-health concerns. Health experts, including studies cited by the World Health Organization, warn that changing urban lifestyles are the primary driver behind this alarming shift.

SEDENTARY WORK IS THE NEW RISK FACTOR

The modern workplace has dramatically reduced physical activity. Long hours at desks, remote work culture, and heavy screen dependence mean many young professionals spend 8-10 hours sitting daily. This sedentary pattern slows metabolism, promotes weight gain, and disrupts insulin regulation a direct pathway toward early-onset type-2 diabetes.

Doctors note that even individuals who appear slim can develop metabolic disorders if daily movement is minimal. The absence of routine walking, manual tasks, or outdoor activity has turned inactivity itself into a major health hazard.
