Though small in size, they play a big role in a woman's health producing eggs, regulating periods, and supporting pregnancy.

They also release hormones like oestrogen and progesterone, which help keep the reproductive system in balance.

As women age, their ovaries naturally change in size and function-becoming more active during reproductive years and shrinking as menopause approaches.

There are several health conditions that can affect the ovaries. Some of the more frequently seen include:

• Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)

• Pelvic infections

• Endometriosis

• Ovarian cysts

• Ovarian tumours (benign or cancerous)

These conditions often show up with signs that may seem mild or unrelated, such as:

• Irregular or missed periods

• Pain in the lower belly or pelvis

• Spotting between cycles

• A feeling of bloating or fullness in the abdomen

• Fatigue, nausea, or occasional vomiting

• Unwanted facial hair (especially in PCOS)

• Bleeding after menopause

Because these symptoms can overlap across different conditions, it's important not to ignore them especially if they persist.
