India is the world's largest importer of arms, accounting for 9.8% of global arms imports between 2019 and 2023.

The country's over-dependence on imports is recognized as a strategic gap in its defence procurement. However, Indian startups are increasingly stepping up to bridge this gap and reduce reliance on imports.
As India strives for self-reliance in defence, a new wave of tech companies is emerging to drive military innovation, focusing on technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), unmanned systems, and advanced surveillance. Government initiatives such as the Defence Ministry's iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) and Technology Development Fund (TDF) are further catalyzing innovation by providing grants and collaboration opportunities for defence startups. Additionally, policy changes like the liberalization of the foreign direct investment (FDI) regime, awarding contracts to local players, and an increasing defence budget are fostering partnerships between local ventures and international firms.
