Congress hits out at FIRs on farmers for stubble burning

The Haryana government's stringent measures against farmers for burning crop residue have sparked widespread backlash from the Congress party and farmer unions.

The state's directive to register FIRs against erring farmers and deny Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops for two consecutive seasons has drawn sharp criticism, with opposition leaders calling for the immediate withdrawal of these orders.

All India Congress Committee General Secretary and Sirsa MP Kumari Selja, on Sunday, condemned the government's move, labeling it as an attack on the farming community. "The first act of the BJP government in Haryana, after taking the oath, was to target farmers. Filing FIRs and imposing red entries to prevent farmers from selling their crops at MSP for two seasons is not only authoritarian but also a direct blow to the livelihood of small farmers,” said Selja. She urged the government to offer solutions instead of punitive measures, adding that intimidating farmers won’t resolve the problem.
