11 killed, dozens injured as gunmen attack Jewish event in Sydney

At least 11 people were killed and 29 others injured in a mass shooting at Australia's Bondi Beach on Sunday in what authorities described as a targeted terrorist attack on the Jewish community during Hanukkah celebrations, CNN reported.

Police said two suspects were involved. One was shot dead at the scene, while the other is in custody in critical condition. The identities of the suspects have not been disclosed. An improvised explosive device was later found in a vehicle linked to the deceased attacker, prompting the deployment of bomb disposal units. Authorities are also investigating whether a third perpetrator may have been involved.

The attack occurred as more than 1,000 people had gathered for a Hanukkah event titled "Chanukah by the Sea", organised by the Australian-Jewish community centre Chabad of Bondi. The event, promoted as a family celebration featuring music, games and entertainment, was being held on the first day of the Jewish festival.

Police said the assault was "designed to target Sydney's Jewish community". Based on the timing, weapons used and the actions of the offenders, the incident was formally declared a terrorist attack hours later, CNN reported.
