Should MPs use public health?
The Citizen
|July 14, 2025
Another day, another ActionSA policy suggestion from the 2005 archives. The idea of public officials being forced to use public services and that will somehow make those services better.
If it's not public officials must use public transport, it's that they must send their kids to public schools. The latest from Herman Mashaba's camp is that public servants should use public health care services.
One can nearly hear Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and his internal laughter at the idea – one that he has publicly supported. Presumably he has no problem supporting it, given that he's doubling down on digging a grave on the National Health Insurance (NHI) Golgotha.
It would be silly to advocate for the blending of private and public health care, but demand that his ilk continue to be allowed use of private health care.
Perhaps that was the strategy of ActionSA all along; getting Motsoaledi to admit a lust toward private health care – but the dude is so turned on by the NHI idea so if it was a strategy, it's gone down as well as a quirky Helen Zille tweet.
