SA 'not ready' for e-voting which needs to be trialled first

E-voting at the next municipal elections has been put on ice for now.

Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) deputy chief electoral officer Masego Sheburi yesterday said the country was not ready for the use of electronic voting in the municipal elections from November 2026 to January 2027.

It looks unlikely to happen in South Africa until certain criteria and due processes have been met, he said.

Sheburi said the IEC had completed extensive consultations across the country on the feasibility of electronic voting, with the process closing on 30 September.
