R900bn needed to fix water woes

South Africa needs R900 billion over the next decade to fix its ageing water and sanitation systems, according to the government.

Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina confirmed that the previously stated figure of R900 billion annually over 10 years remained relevant, though costs were expected to rise.

"It is anticipated that the projected costs will rise over time due to increases of, among others, inflation, prices of material and global volatility affecting supply chain," Majodina said in response to a question from DA MP Stephen Moore.

She said the government was looking at ways to find the funding.
