JOY: ALL THREE STABLE RUNNERS LAND POSITONS IN FIRST FOUR GATES

- Jack Milner

The Tony Peter stable has had its ups and downs over the past couple of years but they certainly had their tails in the air after Wednesday night's draw for the R6-million Betway Summer Cup over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday 29 November.

Peter has three runners in the 20-horse field and they drew barriers No 1, No 3 and No 4. He has the race favourite, The Equator, in the field and the Irish-bred import landed the No 3 draw with The Ultimate King in pole position and outsider Son OF Raj at No 4.

Squeezed between the Peter in gate No 2 is last year's winner Atticus Finch who is also the second favourite for the race.

Interestingly, when the panel discussed the race after draw, The Equator was virtually ignored, with most of them going with either Atticus Finch to score the double or KwaZulu-Natal visitor King Pelles, trained by Gareth van Zyl, who took the time to visit Joburg and attend the draw function.

Peter, however, confirmed that the 22-10 favourite is putting up some encouraging work at home and he will be at his best on the day.

It feels silly to even suggest this, but based on the performances of the country's strong spin bowling contingent, Keshav Maharaj's place in the national Test team might be in danger.
