UNITED DEFENDER ‘EXCITED TO GET GOING AGAIN' AT RIVERSIDE

- By STUART JAMIESON Regional football editor stuart.jamieson@reachplc.com

NEWCASTLE United defender Matt Targett admits he has endured some tough times on Tyneside in recent seasons as he looks to get his career back on track on loan at Middlesbrough.

The left-back made the temporary switch to Teesside in August, and made his debut from the bench in Boro’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United before the international break - setting up Tommy Conway's winner with a superb assist from the left flank.

After being an integral part in the Newcastle side which avoided relegation under Eddie Howe in 2022, after signing on loan from Aston Villa, Targett made his move to Newcastle permanent that summer.

However, bad luck with injuries and the form of players such as Dan Burn and Lewis Hall, have meant his first-team opportunities have been few and far between in the last few seasons, and he’s relishing the chance of more gametime at the Riverside.
