EVERY episode of The Rockford Files began with the answerphone message “This is Jim Rockford. At the tone, leave your name and message. I'll get back to you”.

The private detective series starring James Garner launched 50 years ago on the BBC on August 13, 1975, and saw the American actor as the easygoing Jim Rockford who was prepared to take on cases for “$200 a day plus expenses”.
