Parking charge plans for Whitley Bay risk driving shoppers away

WHITLEY

- By AUSTEN SHAKESPEARE

Bay locals and business owners have slammed “diabolical” plans to introduce parking charges in two of the town’s main car parks. The popular seaside resort is regularly featured among the best places to visit with its Blue Flag status beach, while also being home to a number of award-winning restaurants.

The plans to impose fees from £1.20 to park at the Playhouse and Park Road car parks have sparked fears over a decline in visitor numbers and the possible impact on the local economy. North Tyneside Council maintains the proposals, which are subject to an ongoing public consultation, have been put forward in the interests of businesses and fairness.

The local authority has also stressed free short-term parking will be kept at key school times. The suggested fees are:

One hour: £1.20; Two hours: £2.40; Three hours: £3.60; All Day Parking: £4.80

Dental hygienist Felicity Whitham, 40, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “It thinks it is going to affect the Playhouse. People will be reluctant to come to if they have to pay. People come earlier on for dinner and it will be difficult for local businesses.
