HE WAS LOCKED UP FOR LIFE FOR KILLING FATHER-TO-BE

- By SOPHIE DOUGHTY

KNIFE killer Philip Craggs is set to be freed from jail.

The murderer was locked up for life with a minimum of 15-and-a-half years for stabbing dad-to-be Paul Gilbert to death in Newcastle.

Just last year, the Parole Board said Craggs should stay behind bars after determining his release would be too risky. But now, following a hearing earlier this month, a decision has been made to free him.

Now the mother of Paul’s child has told of her devastation. The woman, who The Chronicle has agreed not to name, said: “I knew it was coming, but it shouldn't be happening. He's taken someone's life for no reason whatsoever. My son’s life is only just starting and he’s now getting out to start reliving his. It’s all wrong but nothing I say will change that decision.”

Paul was killed after he accidentally bumped into Craggs, who was with his twin brother Mark, on Welbeck Road, in Walker, Newcastle, on February 13, 2008.
