Jesmond chase Gosforth for title

JESMOND Monarchs have emerged as a challenger for the Northumbria League Division 1 title after defeating rivals Newcastle Dragons 3.5-0.5 in an exciting match on Tuesday.

They now move into clear second place on 8 points from six matches, behind Gosforth Empire on 9 points from five matches.

Newcastle slip back to third with 6 points from six matches.

Jesmond are now a force to be reckoned with since signing their new top board, Scottish international Andy Burnett, from friendly rivals Newcastle. Jesmond and Newcastle share their venue, the Punch Bowl Inn on Jesmond Road, with Jesmond playing their home games on Tuesdays and Newcastle on Wednesdays.

Both clubs play friendly and blitz games together on Wednesday evenings, but the over-the-board league rivalry is still very keen.
