ONE of Tyneside's most iconic venues will mark its centenary in two years' time.

- By DAVID MORTON

Newcastle City Hall, on Northumberland Road, opened its doors in 1927. It was a notable year in the region's history, which also saw Newcastle United win the club's last league title, Newcastle Brown Ale go on sale for the first time, while the Tyne Bridge was under construction and just one year away from completion.

The City Hall since then has been an integral part of the region's cultural and civic life, hosting concerts as well as political meetings, award ceremonies, classical music recitals, prize-givings and more.

The Chronicle recently reported, however, that documents lodged with Newcastle City Council noted the venue has "not moved with the times" and is currently being overlooked by major acts. Consequently, Academy Music Group and Live Nation who run the Grade II listed 02 City Hall are now planning improvements which will enable it to "regain its former glory".
