Bridge saved from demolition costs council £20k
The Chronicle
|June 27, 2026
NORTH Shields’ Borough Road footbridge has seen £20,000 in maintenance over three years since it was saved from demolition.
-
North Tyneside Council spent tens of thousands earlier this year on revamping the footbridge linking Waldo Street and Tennyson Terrace above Borough Road. The works have included the removal of overgrown vegetation, the ripping out of saplings that had taken hold of the stonework, and the repainting of the bridge's abutments.
The works come just over three years after the bridge was saved from demolition by the council in May 2023, following a Planning Inspectorate decision. The bridge was subject to a three-day public inquiry in January 2023 to decide its fate.
