New rules slash time for electricity, rooftop solar

In a bid to streamline and expedite the process of obtaining new electricity connections and promoting renewable energy adoption, the government has announced significant amendments to the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020.

Under the revised norms, the timeframes for acquiring new electricity connections have been notably reduced across different regions.

Metropolitan areas are set to witness a significant acceleration in the process, with the time required for obtaining a new connection slashed to just three days, down from the previous seven-day timeline. Similarly, municipal areas will now witness a faster process, with the timeframe reduced from fifteen days to seven days. Even in rural areas, where infrastructure challenges are often more pronounced, the time for acquiring new connections has been shortened from thirty days to fifteen days, except for regions with hilly terrain where the timeline remains at 30 days.
