Monsoon safety, ONGC reduces offshore helicopter flights to prevent accidents

India's leading oil and gas producer, ONGC, has temporarily reduced helicopter sorties to its offshore installations on both the east and west coasts to prevent deadly accidents during the monsoon season.

This measure, in place for three months from June to August, aims to mitigate risks associated with helicopter flights in challenging weather conditions.

To support this decision, ONGC has extended the work-related stay of its offshore employees from 14 days to 21 days, though still short of the international norm of 28 days. This extension is intended to reduce the frequency of helicopter trips needed to transport personnel and materials to the offshore platforms.

Globally, personnel manning offshore installations typically adhere to a 28-day rotation cycle, followed by an equal number of days off. These facilities are equipped with accommodations, kitchens, and recreational areas to support such extended stays. While private sector operators in India follow this 28-day norm, ONGC has historically maintained a 14-day cycle without a clear rationale.
