Meghalaya High Court Ordered Expedited Construction Of Shillong Dawki Highway: 'Highways Are Of Paramount Importance For State Welfare'

The Meghalaya High Court in the case Shri Kaustav Paul Vs. State of Meghalaya & Ors observed and has directed the State Authorities to expedite the building of the National Highway from Shillong to Dawki near the Bangladesh border, terming it of 'paramount importance' for the 'welfare of the state'.

The court in the case asked the authorities to ensure that afforestation work is strictly carried out.
The Division bench comprising of Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh was hearing the present matter.
In the present case, the Public Interest Litigation, PIL filed seeking the intervention of court to prevent the felling of 103 trees, stated to be of great value coming in the way of the highway construction.
