GOVT EXPANDS MANDATORY GOLD HALLMARKING TO 55 NEW DISTRICTS

The Indian government has taken a significant step in ensuring the purity and authenticity of gold jewellery and artifacts by implementing the third phase of mandatory hallmarking in several districts across the country. Hallmarking of gold is a certification process that verifies the purity of the precious metal, providing consumers with confidence in the quality of their purchases. This move is part of the government's broader efforts to enhance consumer protection and transparency in the gold jewellery industry.

Prior to June 16, 2021, gold hallmarking in India was voluntary. However, recognizing the importance of ensuring the quality and purity of gold products in the market, the government decided to make gold hallmarking mandatory. The implementation of mandatory hallmarking has been carried out in phases.
