Bengaluru IPL stampede: Unpacking the legal blame game
The Business Guardian
|June 18, 2025
"As victims of the Bengaluru IPL stampede seek answers, the legal spotlight turns to the BCCI, stadium management, and local authorities, each potentially liable for negligence."
June 4, 2025, the day RCB won the Indian Premier League (IPL), ended up in tragedy instead of celebration. The stampede at the exit of Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium killed 11 people and injured more than 30, bringing sadness to the city's special occasion. Since the Karnataka High Court stepped in on its own and a magisterial inquiry is taking place, people are now questioning those involved about the incident. Should the organizers, the IPL franchise, the administration or the BCCI take responsibility for this terrible event?
The incident happened during RCB's victory parade that was held to mark their win over Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final. Roughly 200,000 to 300,000 people gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which is much more than the stadium can hold. News sources say that just before 4:00 PM near Gates 2 and 3, groups of fans, including those without tickets, tried to force their way in. The problem was heightened by stories of free admission, uncontrolled crowds and poor cooperation among those in charge and the local officials. Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, said that there were more than 2-3 lakh people at Chinnaswamy Stadium and they never expected such a big crowd. It turned into a major disaster, causing 11 deaths, most of them youths and bringing about many injuries.
The state government has acted quickly, guaranteeing Rs 10 lakh relief to the families who lost loved ones and giving free medical care to those who were injured. An inquiry conducted by an IAS officer has been appointed to study the reasons behind the lapses and the Chief Minister has promised to take tough action against those who are found guilty. At the same time, the Karnataka High Court is handling the case to assign responsibility.
