Bangladesh's PM Sheikh Hasina Clinches Fourth Consecutive Term

Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has secured a record fourth consecutive term as her Awami League party achieved. an overwhelming majority in the general elections marked by sporadic violence and a boycott by the main opposition BNP and its allies.

Hasina's party won 223 seats in the 300-seat Parliament, with the election held for 299 seats. The election for one seat will be conducted later due to the death of a candidate, according to media reports.

The Jatiya Party, the main opposition in Parliament, secured 11 seats, the Bangladesh Kallyan party won one constituency, and independent candidates emerged victorious in 62 seats. Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and the Workers Party of Bangladesh each won one seat.

Hasina, 76, also the president of Awami League, won the Gopalganj-3 constituency in a landslide victory, marking her eighth term as a Member of Parliament.

Having ruled the strategically located South Asian nation since 2009, Hasina secured a record fourth consecutive term and fifth overall term in the onesided election, which witnessed the second-lowest turnout since the restoration of democracy in 1991. The controversial February 1996 polls had a 26.5 percent turnout, the lowest in Bangladesh’s history.
