A LEGACY OF STRENGTH AND UNITY

The relationship between India and Mauritius is deeply rooted in shared history, culture, and mutual cooperation across various sectors. This comprehensive overview highlights significant events in the realms of defense, diaspora culture, trade, and technology.

STRATEGIC ALLIES

India and Mauritius have cultivated a robust defense partnership over the years, marked by strategic collaborations and mutual support:

■ 1983: Operation Lal Dora

In 1983, India conceived Operation Lal Dora, a plan for a potential military intervention in Mauritius. Approved by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the operation aimed to deploy troops from the 54th Division to support Mauritian Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth against a perceived coup threat from his rival, Paul Bérenger. This initiative underscored the geopolitical importance of Mauritius and India's commitment to its stability.

■ 2014: Induction of MCGS Barracuda

The Mauritius Coast Guard enhanced its capabilities with the induction of MCGS Barracuda, an offshore patrol vessel built by India's Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE). Launched on August 2, 2013, and commissioned in 2014, Barracuda is 74.1 meters long, 11.4 meters wide, and has a displacement of approximately 1,350 tonnes. It can achieve a maximum speed of 22 knots and is armed with a 30mm gun featuring a stabilized optical remote control system, along with heavy and medium machine guns. This vessel marked a significant milestone as the first warship exported by an Indian shipyard, reflecting India's growing defense manufac turing capabilities and its commitment to supporting regional maritime security.
