HC admits CBI plea to enhance Lalu Prasad's sentence in fodder scam

The Jharkhand High Court has admitted a criminal appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking enhancement of the sentence awarded to former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad and two others in the fodder scam case related to fraudulent withdrawal of ?89 lakh from the Deoghar treasury.

The CBI had approached the High Court seeking to increase the sentence of six convicts in the case. However, three of themR.K. Rana, Phoolchand Singh, and Mahesh Prasad-have passed away, and hence, the matter proceeded only against the remaining three: Lalu Prasad, Beck Julius, and Subir Bhattacharya. A division bench of Justice Rongon Mukhopahyay and Justice Ambuj Nath accepted the CBI's appeal after hearing arguments presented by the agency's counsel, Deepak Bharti. The appeal challenges
