Rob Bowker, whose name is synonymous with the town, was formally handed the honour at last Thursday night's council meeting.
The official citation reads: "In recognition of your charitable services in supporting local communities, Tamworth Borough Council admit Rob Bowker to be an Honorary Freeman of the Borough".
Rob's team were also individually awarded a Civic Pride award for their efforts. In a speech, Rob said: "I humbly, excitedly and joyfully accept tonight’s honour with humility, a huge sense of gratitude and, may I say, complete surprise.
"Just over 40 years ago, I met a man called Ian Gibbons who would forever change the course of my life in 1985. I helped to put on a concert at the Assembly Rooms, Tamworth Rocks for Ethiopia, then there was Tam Aid, a song recorded by local musicians in the then Expresso Bongo recording studios, then a cycle ride for charity from John o’ Groats to Land’s End.
