Major city road closed to clean up drivers' rubbish

Some of the 105 bags of rubbish collected from Tunstall Hope Road.

Sunderland City Council have confirmed that Tunstall Hope Road was closed off to traffic earlier this month to enable a "large-scale litter pick and verge tidy, following a sharp rise in waste being thrown from passing vehicles".

This is the second time within the past year that the road has had to be closed for this reason, with the previous cleanup taking place in May 2025.
