Sue Wilkinson enjoys a trip to the music hall
-
Arms raised, gavel poised in his hand, chairman Leonard Sachs, becostumed in dress trousers and shirt, frock coat, waistcoat and bow tie delivers his alliterative introduction to The Good Old Days:
"Once again, good evening ladies and gentlemen. Unequivocally, accredited, adulatory, accredited accolades, our inaugural artistes exultantly exhibit executant expertise."
What he means is: “Terry Lightfoot and his jazz band will now play music hall tunes.”
The late actor and founder of the Players Club Leonard Sachs and his hyperbole are synonymous with The Good Old Days, a music hall variety show performed at the Leeds City Varieties.
It recreates an authentic atmosphere of the Victorian/ Edwardian music hall with songs and sketches of the era performed in the style of the original artistes - and the audience dressed in period costume.
