Major changes for Hajj 2026

THE Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has implemented new changes for the 2026 season, removing local licensed travel operators from facilitating the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

According to the ministry, a Saudi-based service provider company, together with the South African Hajj and Umrah Council (SAHUC) will now manage and organise all aspects of the Hajj experience for pilgrims.

Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world gather in Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj - the sacred Muslim pilgrimage.

The pilgrimage is mandatory for all Muslims to make at least once in their lives, provided they are physically and financially capable.

Under the new system, all service contracts, including those for accommodation, catering, transportation and on-the-ground logistics in Mecca, Madinah and Azizia will be signed directly between Saudi providers and the South African Hajj mission.
