Then, late in the game, Reece James’ tug on Harvey Barnes was looked at by the video officials.

It was the Gordon decision which was the game-defining one, however.

Newcastle could have had the opportunity to go 3-1 ahead if the call had been made.

Howe told The Sunday Sun: “This one decision, I think, was wrong. I think that’s where VAR really should intervene.

“Yeah, it’s a difficult one to work out because, seeing it live, I thought it was clear.”
