Victim, 13, bullied over injuries

SPEEDING driver mowed down a girl of 13 and left her for dead in the street.

Mervyn Boreland was doing more than double the 30mph limit in a Volkswagen Golf moments before the collision in Holly Lane, Erdington, where the girl was crossing the road.

She was thrown into the air and landed on the windscreen, which smashed, before coming to rest on the ground. She suffered extensive injuries which are ongoing and will change the rest of her life, Birmingham Crown Court was told.

Cowardly Boreland, 49, drove off at speed, mounting the kerb and crossing the wrong side of the road. He abandoned the car in Kings Norton, near his home, and later claimed he thought he had simply clipped a wing mirror.

He was jailed for three years after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving in relation to the May 2023 incident.

The dad-of-two, of Icknield Street, Kings Norton, was also banned from driving for five years from the point he is released.
