The former Rangers manager's pursuit of being rehired in the same position, but under new owners, strikes me as being about the rehabilitation of Gerrard's modest reputation in that role as much as anything else.

Rangers don't need aura. They need authenticity.

A proper manager who can dedicate himself to the business of answering one simple question.

Was Russell Martin a bad coach in charge of good players who suffered under his misdirection and failed to win matches as a result?

Or was Martin a bad coach working with equally bad players who'll now be a problem for his successor?

Gerrard talks about having “unfinished business” in management, prompting the suspicion it's more about him on a personal level than whichever club employs him.
