Smart colt hangs tough to loot St Leger for all-conquering O'Brien
SCANDINAVIA put his rivals on ice for Aidan O'Brien in the Betfred St Leger at Doncaster. The 2/1 favourite was the best fancied of the powerful Ballydoyle trio in the Classic having stayed two miles superbly when lifting the Goodwood Cup.
Tom Marquand made full use of Scandinavia's stamina as he disputed the lead with his stablemate Lambourn for much of the 1m 6f trip. Scandinavia gained the outright lead when the Epsom Derby hero faded two out only to come under threat from O'Brien's other challenger Stay True (11/2). The colt eventually wore that rival down and he kept up his gallop dourly to deny the fast-finishing Rahiebb (14/1) in the dying strides.
Stay True (11/2) kept on gamely late for third with Lambourn fourth.
