Nervy Gers get job done to hit summit for first time in two years
-
TWO YEARS. 24 months. And 104 weeks.
It has been 749 sleeps since Rangers fans last woke up to their side top of the league.
And while the performance might cause them restless nights they eventually put United to bed to go first and pile pressure on Hearts and Celtic today.
Ryan Naderi’s first league goal got them off and running before Dujon Sterling, Thelo Aasgaard and sub Bojan Miovski netted.
But United made them sweat as goals from Amar Fatah and Zac Sapsford kept the Terrors in touch until the last five minutes.
Aasgaard did the legwork for the opening goal with a brilliant run in from the right.
He unleashed a 20-yard effort that Ashley Maynard-Brewer should have dealt with. But the keeper could only palm the ball into the path of Naderi, who tapped home from close in.
Ten minutes later Sterling flicked home his first goal of the campaign. Aasgaard's cross from the right was met by the head of Andreas Skov Olsen before Sterling got the decisive touch.
That should have been it. But as is the case with this flaky Gers side their lead was pegged back.
United broke from their own half, Emmanuel Agyei powered past Tochi Chukwuani and fed Fatah, who cut inside John Souttar and slipped a bending effort beyond Jack Butland.
Youssef Chermiti replaced Naderi at the break and could have restored the two-goal advantage in 50 minutes but shot weakly at Maynard-Brewer.
