His last film in Iran, Meta-morphosis in the Slaughter house, was screened at 17 festivals and won four gongs in the US including best film and director. One day, Javad was ambushed by three men as he walked home. A hood was thrust over his head and he was dragged into a car.

Javad said: “They pushed me to the floor and were punching me in the head and the neck. I was screaming, begging to know who they were but they were just shouting insults at me.”
