Putin hopes the West will tire of war as he closes in on energy reserves

VLADIMIR Putin is banking on Western "Ukraine fatigue" to secure a permanent hold of seized territory, experts warned last night.
The move would allow Moscow which already controls Ukraine's grain exports to dominate much of the nation's vast energy reserves.
Peace negotiations to end the three-month war remain stalled, despite mounting pressure from some Western corners.
Though Ukraine's untapped gas was not the primary motive for the February 24 invasion, denying it to Ukraine is an important plank of Putin's "economic war".
Ukraine boasts a potential 5.4 trillion cubic metres of untapped natural gas reserves confirmed reserves of 1.9tcm are Europe's second largest after Norway.
Most of this lies east of the Dnipro river, with tranches in Kharkiv and Poltava province, as well as the Black Sea and Azov regions, including Crimea.
