Electric Alpine has real hot hatch feel

Sunday Express

June 22, 2025

It's been a tricky time for hot hatches. Loved for their zippy character and no-frills design that made them the ideal all-round performance car, they're now having to transition to electric.

And with smooth running and no engine noise, channelling character into a battery-powered model is bound to be tough. That's where the Alpine A290 looks to change things. With typical French flair, boxy 80s-inspired looks and an interior packed with cool features, could it be the hot hatch for modern times? We've been finding out.

WHAT'S NEW?

This Alpine uses the recently introduced Renault 5 as a base, but there are sharp tweaks that make it a lot hotter than its urban cousin. Upgraded suspension means better cornering ability while inside, there's an altogether more sporty design. Neat touches include a wheel switch to increase or decrease regenerative braking. A dedicated “overtake” button unlocks the full potential of the electric motor.
