But fans still struggled to hear the 71-year-old US singer, whose hits include 1983’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and 1989’s I Drove All Night.

Later Coldplay made history in front of over 100,000 fans as they became the first act to headline Glastonbury five times. With millions more watching on the BBC, Chris Martin’s band took to the iconic Pyramid Stage for the first time since 2016 – and overtook The Cure, who have headlined the slot four times.

It came after Kasabian rocked the Woodies Stage, formerly the John Peel Stage, with a surprise show.
