Check out your pond for latest 'superfood'

THE newest superfood to send health conscious diners "quackers" may just be in the most unlikely place - your nearest pond.

Duckweed, a favourite food source for ducks and other wildfowl, contains high amounts of protein, up to 43% of its nutritional value, according to a study by the University of Leeds.

The plant, also known as water lentils, was last week approved for use as a food by the EU following extensive research.

It is also easy to produce and does not require a large area to grow it, unlike other products. Each plant can divide into two every three days, allowing for huge exponential growth.
