67-year-old Greek Street bridge has 'reached end of its life'

HUNDREDS of engineers have completed the 'first main phase' of an epic project to replace a 67-year-old railway bridge.

The Greek Street bridge in Stockport is being replaced in a huge and complex £20m project.

On it sits a four-way roundabout which carries traffic over the West Coast mainline next to Stockport station.

It is a key traffic route between the town centre, Shaw Heath and Edgeley, including Stockport County's Edgeley Park ground.

Built in 1958, the 67-year-old structure has 'reached the end of its life,’ say Network Rail.

The road was closed on March 31 and will remain shut for a year as work to dismantle, demolish and replace it is carried out.
