But there are times when it works wonders.
Just before Christmas, family and friends gathered for the funeral of Alun Gibbard, a Llanelli-based BBC Wales journalist who became a prolific writer of books, including biographies of Carwyn Jones and Delme Thomas.
Sadly, I missed the funeral in Cardiff because I was unable to travel but, thanks to the wonders of the internet I have been able to view a recording of the funeral service.
