They crossed for six tries in the defeat to the Bulls, with Keelan Giles and Keiran Williams crossing for two scores apiece.

And while conceding nine tries will be disappointing, Lake believed they showed enough ahead of next week’s clash with the Stormers to go into the match with confidence.

"To come to Loftus and score 40 points is an immense display of attack from us," said the Wales hooker.

"But to also concede 53 is tough to take.

"Physically we stepped up. We matched the physical battle.

"It’s just that one moment where maybe we switched off and the Bulls punished us.

"They were very clinical in the 22.

"Massively happy with how we started. Four tries in the first half is excellent.

"I think the set-piece probably let us down. Didn't really get a foothold with scrum or line-out.

"Didn't really get possession and it's tough to get into the game then. We'll walk away with a lot of work-ons, but also a lot of positives.
