Force honoured for controversial facial technology

SOUTH Wales Police has received a national award for its controversial facial recognition technology.

- RAHAF ALI

The force was recognised by the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), winning an innovation award for its “operator-initiated facial recognition” system.

The award celebrates how technology is being used to support officers on the ground and improve outcomes for the public.

Officers have the app on their phones and can use it to confirm the identity of individuals, including when they are unable or refuse to provide their details, or when they are suspected of providing false information.

It can also be used to identify missing people, those at risk of harm, or even individuals who are unconscious or deceased, helping officers to trace families quickly and bring closure in difficult circumstances.
