City centre music venue to close at end of month

The New Moon will close at the end of this month

Formerly known as The Moon, the venue on Womanby Street reopened earlier this year with a fresh identity under the leadership of Matt Cutrupi, who is also behind Bunkhouse Hostel and DnB Bar on St Mary’s Street.

The relaunch aimed to breathe new life into a space many in Cardiff’s music scene considered vital.

The original venue, The Moon, closed suddenly in November 2024, with its former team citing the cost-of-living crisis and rising running costs as the final straw.

Its return as The New Moon sparked hope and excitement, particularly among independent artists and gig-goers.

Speaking earlier this year, Matt reflected on the venue's legacy and the hope behind its rebirth: “The Moon before it shut was hosting a load of events but not necessarily similar to the ones we're doing. And when it shut, obviously everyone was pretty sad about it.

“The live music side of it has been going really well.
